Salop Leisure win charity football tournament at Shrewsbury Town's Montgomery Waters Meadow

Salop Leisure’s football team were delighted to be crowned winners of a charity five-a-side tournament played at Shrewsbury Town’s Montgomery Waters Meadow.

The seven-man squad representing the Shrewsbury-based caravan, motorhome and campervan dealership emerged victorious in a tournament for local businesses staged by Shrewsbury Town in the Community.

Salop Leisure, one of 18 teams to take part, held their nerve to beat ABP on penalties in the final following a goalless draw.

They also won their their semi-final against Hatfields Land Rover on penalties, with goalkeeper Morgan Dodds saving spot kicks in both of the exciting shoot-outs.

Ed Glover, marketing manager at Salop Leisure and part of the winning team, said: “We only entered a side on the morning of the competition, so we quickly put a team together and were delighted to win.

"We were also pleased to concede just one goal throughout the tournament.

“It was a great event which helped raise money for the excellent work which the Shrewsbury Town in the Community team do with so many projects across the county.”

Salop Leisure’s victory extended the company’s successful record at the home of Shrewsbury Town.

"It keeps our unbeaten run going on the hallowed turf as we have never lost a game there,” added Ed. “We’ve previously won four 11-a-side matches and now added a tournament victory.

“We are always keen to challenge other local companies to an 11-a-side game.”

Ceri Nicholls, the partnerships and events manager for Shrewsbury Town in the Community, the official charity of Shrewsbury Town Football Club, hailed the tournament, which raised over £600, a great success.

She added: “It was a great fundraising event for Shrewsbury Town in the Community.

“We were really pleased to be able to give local companies the opportunity to play on the Montgomery Waters Meadow pitch, as well as being able to increase our profile among businesses across Shropshire.

“The event raised over £600 which will continue to help fund projects in the area, ranging from cancer rehabilitation and disability sports to active ageing and many more.”
