A leading Shropshire businessman has pledged his company’s support for a Shrewsbury-based independent weekly newspaper which has recently celebrated its first birthday.

Tony Bywater, chairman of caravan, motorhome and campervan dealership Salop Leisure, invited the three local owners of Shrewsbury Now! – Jan Edwards, Mandy Bell and Karen Thompson – to meet him at the company’s Emstrey headquarters.

He congratulated them on their free newspaper’s first anniversary and presented them each with a bouquet.

“What you are doing with your newspaper is very important for the economy of Shrewsbury,” Mr Bywater told the women. “What you have achieved in your first year is magnificent and I hope this newspaper goes from strength to strength in the future.”

He encouraged other businesses in Shrewsbury and surrounding area to support the newspaper.

Jan Edwards said for the first 10 months the newspaper had operated from a table in the front room of Mandy Bell’s house, but it had recently moved to an office in Battlefield, Shrewsbury.

“Whilst the newspaper industry in general is shrinking, we think there is still a need for a publication like ours and we are exploring a range of opportunities to grow the newspaper,” she added.

“The newspaper is produced by a team of respected local businesspeople who have some 150 years of collective commercial experience in sales and marketing.”

Shrewsbury Now is delivered to 20,000 addresses door-to-door in Shrewsbury as well as to new housing developments in the town by a delivery team of 60. An additional 5,000 copies are delivered in bulk, including to villages within a 10-mile radius of Shrewsbury.
